Congratulations to Representative Joseph “Joe” Tate on his re-election to the House of Representatives and being selected as Speaker of the House for the upcoming legislative session. Representative Tate has made history becoming the first Black lawmaker to be Speaker of the House.
Tate earned his Bachelor’s degree in public policy and Political Science in 2003 from Michigan State University while playing football where he served as a three-year starter, captain as a senior, and earning All-Big Ten Academic honors. He made his mark outside of the classroom, and off the field as well during his time in East Lansing, as he also was presented MSU's Community Service and Leadership Award. In 2008, Tate earned a Master’s of Science in Kinesiology and Exercise Science.
Following his academic and athletic success at MSU, Tate played two years in the National Football League before being commissioned as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps. During his time in the Marine Corps, he was twice deployed to Afghanistan, each time in key leadership roles overseeing operations and prioritizing the welfare of the community of service members.
Tate continued his education at the University of Michigan earning his Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science in Environmental Policy and Planning in 2017.
Tate turned to politics in Michigan and won election the House of Representatives in 2018 and has served two terms prior to winning re-election on November 8, 2022.
We look forward to Speaker-Elect Tate’s continued leadership endeavors and continued successes which all Michigan citizens will benefit from.
